Starting our Academic Routines!

It is our second week of first grade and as we continue to build classroom community, learn rules/expectation, and get to know each other we are also working toward practicing our academic routines and schedule.

Every morning we start with a morning meeting where the whole class gets together to greet, share, talk about the calendar and schedule, and do a fun activity together. Right now a few students each day are doing their brown bag share so that we can learn more about each other.

After morning meeting we have our word study time where we are currently playing the "mystery name of the day" game where we get to learn more about students in class as we review consonants, vowels, syllables, and word chunks.

Following word study we have unified arts (PE, music, art, library) then a break for snack. After snack we have our science and social studies time, which this month is used for learning/practicing use of classroom materials, classroom rules and expectations, and community building. Next we have our math block! Below are photos of students learning to work with partners this week to review counting strategies and use of math materials (and their new math journals).

After math first graders break for lunch and recess then come back to class for read aloud and writers' workshop. So far our writers' workshop time has been spent reviewing care of materials and creating pages for class books about our summer, our favorite places to read, and some of our favorite things. Next week we will launch into our narrative writing unit.

Following writers' workshop we take a quick break then end the day with readers' workshop. Thus far we have been spending our readers' workshop time practicing book care and learning to choose books from our classroom library, read them, and put them back safely in the correct spots. Today we discussed 3 ways to read a book: reading the words, reading the pictures (using pictures to tell a story), or re-telling a book you already know. We will launch into reading strategies and selecting good fit books after we have become more secure in our reading routines in class.
