Self Portraits

This week we are working on one of my favorite projects in all of first grade. The kids paint, cut, and glue to make self portraits which we hang up on the classroom wall for the year! During the month of September we spend much time learning about and celebrating ourselves and each other as we learn about others and build a classroom community. One of those celebrations of self is through our self portrait project. We read a number of great books about being alike and different and students choose the skin, hair, and eye color that they think best represents themselves to create their project. Here are some photos of the books we are reading and the first steps of our project as well as two example portraits from a previous year. I will post more photos of our process and our final products at the end of the week!
