Word Study

First graders have been working on reviewing short vowels and reading/spelling words with short vowels in them throughout the fall. You have likely seen short vowel word family work and word sorts coming home corresponding to different vowels we have been working on. Below are some photos of students working with our interactive projector to read and highlight words with short vowels in a poem.

Halloween

Today, on Halloween, we added a little festive fun to our regular schedule. We read the Gail Gibbons books (children's nonfiction), Halloween is... and The Pumpkin Book and made candy corn people. The photo of the Frankenstein craft is from Friday's harvest party!

Fire Station Visit

During the month of October first graders have been learning about community helpers. Last week we had a visit at school from the Colchester Police Department in order to learn more about what police officers do in our community. On Monday of this week first grade classes walked to the fire station down the street from school to learn about how volunteer firefighters help in our community. We also learned about fire safety and made fire station dalmation hats for fun. Here are some photos!

Burnham Library Trip

On Wednesday of this week our class and Ms. Ransom's class took a walking field trip to the Burnham Memorial Library down the street from school. We learned about our local library and how librarians are community helpers!
