Grand-friend Day

Last Monday UMS celebrated a new, special day at school. We called it Grand-friend Day and students got to invite grandparents or another special relative or family friend to join us at school for an hour. We read together, did a fall art project, and the Grand-friends got to see our classroom and a little of what we do at school! Thank you to all of the Grand-friends who joined us. Here are some photos from that morning.

Pajama Day Celebration

When our class fills our classroom bin with Champ Bands for PBIS we vote on an in-class celebration that we would like to do together to reward ourselves for a job well done. Last week we voted on having a pajama day in class to celebrate! Here are some photos from that day.

We are close to filling the whole school containers a second time so we will see when all of UMS will get to celebrate together again!

Fire Station and Police Visit

First grade continued our learning about community helpers by having police officers visit us here at school last week. Today we made up our walking field trip to the fire station, which had previously been rained out!

When the police visited we learned a bit about what police officers do in our town, how people become police officers, and what different parts of the job are.

When we visited the fire station today we reviewed fire safety, saw where the fire fighters have meetings, cook food, and stay over night, and we got to see the fire pole and climb inside of the trucks! Miss Ransom was also dressed up in one of the fire fighters uniform to show the kids the parts of the uniform and that the people inside of those suits are the same safe, friendly people we know when they are not in the suits (helping kids realize that they should not be afraid if they see fire fighters in full gear during an emergency).

Library Visit and Fire Safety

First graders have been learning about community helpers as our first social studies unit of the year. This is fire safety week and we have been learning about being fire safe. We were supposed to visit the fire station on Monday as part of this learning but we had pouring rain! We are re-scheduled to try again on Monday, October 23. Next Wednesday we will have police officers come to class to talk to us about ways that the police help our community.

Today we took a walking field trip to the Burnham Library down the street. We learned about the library and librarians in our community, did some reading, and many kids checked out books! Here are some photos from our trip. Thank you to the parents who joined us!
