Flynn Theater Trip

Today all four first grade classes went on a trip to the Flynn Theater in downtown Burlington to see the children's matinee, Curious George and the Golden Meatball! I always think we are so fortunate to have the opportunity to take students to the Flynn each year so they can experience live theater in such a wonderful place! This year we also had the great fortune of getting to have some people from the Flynn come to UMS before the play (last Friday) to hold a companion workshop and get us ready for the show. We also read Curious George books over the past few days and today we had a lot of fun! Here are a few photos of the class in their seats getting ready for the show! Thank you to our volunteers for coming with us today!

Spring Symmetry

We have taken down our snowmen projects (those are coming home today) and having replaced them with colorful butterflies and dragonflies in hopes that spring weather will soon be here! First graders have recently been studying an introduction to geometry during math so we created a spring symmetry project to replace our snowmen! Students created symmetrical butterflies and dragonflies, then drew symmetrical designs on them and painted them in bright colors. They are now hung up in our hallway. Come on spring!

Opinion Writing

First graders are wrapping up nonfiction writing and beginning a unit on opinion writing. We started by exploring the difference between fact and opinion (which was an easy segue from our long study of fact and nonfiction) and are now doing some writing about our own opinions on things. We will next get into exploring others' opinions, opinions expressed in texts we read, and how to use examples given in a text to support an opinion. Yesterday, on St. Patrick's Day, I wrote "Would you rather be a leprechaun or catch a leprechaun" on the board and students had some fun writing opinion pieces explaining which one they would choose and why. Here are a few photos I took.
