Poinsettias

We have been learning about December holidays in class, last week focusing on Hanukkah, and this week focusing on Las Posadas. Las Posadas is a holiday celebrated in Mexico from December 16-24 and learning about it is a great first discussion of traditions in Mexico, a country that we study in depth later in first grade. Las Posadas is a pre-Christmas holiday celebrating Mary and Joseph's travels from one inn to another searching for a place to stay on the first Christmas Eve. We have been reading about the holiday and learning about poinsettias which originated in Mexico and would bloom during December, making them a popular decoration during Las Posadas, Christmas, and December in general! Poinsettias are also called "la Flor de Noche Buena," or the Christmas Eve Flower! We have a real poinsettia in class and have been looking at it as we created our own poinsettias to decorate the hall.
