Opinion Writing

First graders are wrapping up nonfiction writing and beginning a unit on opinion writing. We started by exploring the difference between fact and opinion (which was an easy segue from our long study of fact and nonfiction) and are now doing some writing about our own opinions on things. We will next get into exploring others' opinions, opinions expressed in texts we read, and how to use examples given in a text to support an opinion. Yesterday, on St. Patrick's Day, I wrote "Would you rather be a leprechaun or catch a leprechaun" on the board and students had some fun writing opinion pieces explaining which one they would choose and why. Here are a few photos I took.
