First Day of School!

We had a very hot, but fun and busy first day of school! We had our first Morning Meeting, and our first math meeting, and started to learn many other classroom routines as well. Students began to explore the use and care of different classroom materials through Guided Discovery (part of the Responsive Classroom approach, along with Morning Meeting) and began to learn and practice first grade expectations. We read two books aloud, the first being The Kissing Hand, which is a wonderful story about keeping your family's love close as you leave for school, and the second being First Day Jitters, a funny book with a surprise ending about someone who is nervous to start school. After reading First Day Jitters, we read a poem about having "jitters" and drinking "jitter juice" to get rid of your first day jitters. We ended by making "jitter juice" and tasting it! Students drew a picture of the "juice" we made and took home the recipe at the end of the day! Below are some photos of students exploring classroom materials and the students and I making "jitter juice" on our first day in first grade!
