Starting our Academic Routines!

It is our second week of first grade and as we continue to build classroom community, learn rules/expectation, and get to know each other we are also working toward practicing our academic routines and schedule.

Every morning we start with a morning meeting where the whole class gets together to greet, share, talk about the calendar and schedule, and do a fun activity together. Right now a few students each day are doing their brown bag share so that we can learn more about each other.

After morning meeting we have our word study time where we are currently playing the "mystery name of the day" game where we get to learn more about students in class as we review consonants, vowels, syllables, and word chunks.

Following word study we have unified arts (PE, music, art, library) then a break for snack. After snack we have our science and social studies time, which this month is used for learning/practicing use of classroom materials, classroom rules and expectations, and community building. Next we have our math block! Below are photos of students learning to work with partners this week to review counting strategies and use of math materials (and their new math journals).

After math first graders break for lunch and recess then come back to class for read aloud and writers' workshop. So far our writers' workshop time has been spent reviewing care of materials and creating pages for class books about our summer, our favorite places to read, and some of our favorite things. Next week we will launch into our narrative writing unit.

Following writers' workshop we take a quick break then end the day with readers' workshop. Thus far we have been spending our readers' workshop time practicing book care and learning to choose books from our classroom library, read them, and put them back safely in the correct spots. Today we discussed 3 ways to read a book: reading the words, reading the pictures (using pictures to tell a story), or re-telling a book you already know. We will launch into reading strategies and selecting good fit books after we have become more secure in our reading routines in class.

First Week of School!

Amazingly we just finished our first (short) week of school for the year! First graders in our class have been reviewing reviewing letter names/sounds, using our word wall, identifying syllables and stretching out words in reading and writing, as well as how to care for books and use our pencils, papers, markers, and other writing supplies! In math we have been reviewing multiple ways to make a number, concepts of greater/less than and odd/even, names and characteristics of shapes, and counting patterns. We have spent lots of time learning about each other, making new friends, and learning/practicing our first grade routines and expectations. Here are some photos of our first three days. Also check out my twitter feed on the sidebar of this blog or follow our class on Twitter at @mrskellysclass to see more photos and information.

Please keep sending in your signed blog permission forms so I can include photos of all of our incredible first grade classmates in the weeks to come!

First Day of School!

We had a wonderful first day of school today! We had our first morning meeting where we began getting to know each other and creating our new classroom community. We started learning and practicing our classroom routines, had library, played outside with friends both old and new, and read the book, The Kissing Hand. We read the book, First Day Jitters, which is about someone who is nervous about starting school (ask your child what the surprise ending was) followed by a poem about a magical Jitter Juice that chases the jitters away. We drank some Jitter Juice then created a tally chart showing how many students in our class did or did not like the juice!

We also began word study today with our "Mystery Name of the Day" game where we guessed consonants and vowels in a mystery name (one of our classmates) and reviewed letter names and sounds as we revealed which classmate's name we were spelling. Today's mystery name was Sabina and we learned a bit about her and started creating a book about the new friends in our class. We will have a different mystery name tomorrow! Tomorrow we plan to start our Everyday math program and to start opening up our classroom library!

I tweeted out one photo from today but please return those completed blog permission slips so that I can start posting photos of all the great things we are starting to learn in first grade!

Last Day of School

Today was our last day of school for the year! This morning we had Step-up Day where all students got to meet and spend time with their new teachers and classes for next year then we had one last school-wide assembly!

This week we read the first two books in the Lulu trilogy (Lulu and the Brontosaurus, and Lulu Walks the Dogs) but we ran out of time to read the third (Lulu's Mysterious Mission). I am attaching a photo of it and have encouraged the kids to visit the library and check it out this summer! This is a very funny set of books.

Have an absolutely wonderful, safe, relaxing, happy summer and I look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Field Day

Tuesday was UMS Field Day at Airport Park! Here are some photos from that day. Of course my camera died part way through the day so I only have some photos but it was a wonderful day! The rain cleared up, the sun came out, the temperature was perfect, we had a BBQ and lots of wonderful activities to do, and the ice cream truck came!

Last Call for Library Books!

Tomorrow is our last day of library class this year! Please, please make sure that any UMS library books you still have at home make it into your child's backpack to return to school tomorrow!
