I forgot to post about this! A couple of weeks ago we finished filling the three big Champ Band bins in our cafeteria and we earned our first whole school celebration! For the celebration everyone had a picnic lunch together outside. Here is a photo of our class sitting together.
We are working toward our next whole school celebration and for this one kids are voting between four choices determined by Mr. Antonicci. The choices were hat day, dance party, extra recess, and watch a movie at school. We shall see which gets the most votes!

Author Visit
At the end of last week local farmer and author John Churchman (and his dog Laddie) visited us at UMS! Mr. Churchman has written stories about his farm animals like, Sweet Pea and Friends, and The Sheepover. Each year students at UMS have been lucky enough to meet a visiting author or illustrator to learn about creating books!
Community Helpers
Last week we finished our social studies unit on Community Helpers. Students ended the unit by writing about a community helper they might like to be when they grow up. They each chose a community helper, drew them, and wrote how they would help the community.
Library Visit
Last week first graders walked to the Burnham Memorial library down the road from school as part of our social studies unit on Community Helpers! We learned about our local library and how librarians have an important job in our community!

Fire Station Visit
Continuing our unit on Community Helpers the first grade classes took a walking field trip to visit the Colchester Volunteer Fire Department just down the street from school today!
We got to learn about the different trucks, learn about what fire fighters do in our community, and learn about fire safety. Students learned about staying low to the ground and crawling to safety if there is smoke in the air, choosing a designated meeting spot outside to meet with family after leaving the house in case of fire, calling 911 from a safe location away from the house/knowing their address to tell the dispatcher, and using the pattern "stop, drop, cover your face, and roll" if there is fire on your clothes. The fire fighters also dressed me up in their gear to explain the different parts to the class and to show the kids that even though the gear might look and sound scary the person inside is friendly and is there to help you.
Thank you to all of the family members who joined us today!
