Scholastic News

Every Friday we have been using our science and social studies time to read Scholastic News Magazine. This is such a fantastic resource because it teaches the kids about important or just fun and interesting non-fiction topics in a very engaging way (while also learning about nonfiction text features). The students each get a copy of the magazine and they look at it as we are logged into our Scholastic News account from which we can project the magazine and accompanying resources on the big screen with our interactive projector. The website allows us to watch a short video giving context for the information we will read, read and interact with the magazine, learn key vocabulary words, and play a related, interactive game.

I have posted photos of us interacting with this before but wanted to post again to share a few of the recent topics. We have learned about some important American Holidays such as Veterans day and more recently Martin Luther King, Jr. Day through Scholastic News. On Monday we will use SN to learn about President's Day. In today's issue we learned about idioms specifically related to the heart since it is so close to Valentine's Day. We learned what idioms like "heart of gold," "pulling on your heartstrings," "learning something by heart," "stealing your heart," and "wearing your heart on your sleeve" mean. We also discussed other idioms we hear a lot such as "hold your horses," "ants in your pants," and "piece of cake" mean. See what other idioms you and your child might notice as people talk to each other at home!
