Today is day 6 in our countdown to the hatch! Two students each day have been turning the eggs to help the chicks develop properly inside and today we candled the eggs for the first time. In order to candle the eggs we turned out the lights and closed our shades to make the room darker. We then put the eggs (one at a time) on a piece of cardboard with a hole cut in it on an overhead projector (actually the only thing I use the overhead for since we have much better technology now!) in order to shine a bright light through. Shining the bright light through the eggs allowed us to see the developing embryo inside of each egg! We were able to see the air space, egg white, and embryo (including blood vessels and the heart) in most of the eggs! This was fantastic because in past years we have not always been able to see the embryos as clearly. Make sure to ask your child about it today!
We will candle the eggs a few more times at different points during incubation to see how the embryos are developing! We expect our chicks to hatch around May 19.
