Fourth Day of School
We have been at school for four days now and have done many things! We have been using our smartboard for math every day, we have been doing different writing activities, practicing using the books in our classroom library, reviewing letters in word study through our Mystery Name of the Day game, exploring classroom materials and play things, and more! If you have not done so yet please send in your child's blog permisson slip so you can see him/her photo on the blog! The program I generally use to turn photos into neat slideshows isn't working with my computer at the moment so I will add lots of photos once that is fixed, hopefully tomorrow!
Forms on the Blog
Today I added a tab to the top bar of the blog for forms you might want access to at home. It occurred to me that I sometimes forget to send new lunch sign up forms home so I added that form so you can print it out!

First Two Days of School!
Can you believe it? Our class has been in first grade for two days now! We have started learning about each other, building our classroom community, and practicing our classroom routines. Please make sure you sign and return your child's blog permission form as soon as possible so you can start seeing his/her photo on the blog! Below you will see photos of some of the things we have done in the past two days. Among these things we did a scavenger hunt to learn more about each other, made first day crowns and did a first day of school survey, used pattern blocks and unifix cubes, started exploring our classroom library, began word study with letter review and our "mystery name of the day game," and used our interactive projector to do interactive morning messages and math games both days! Stay tuned for more posts and photos as the blog permission slips keep coming in.

Have a Great Summer!
Time flies! We had our last day of school on Wednesday and our class is moving on to second grade in the fall! On our last day we had Step Up Day, where student met their teachers for next year, we had a whole school assembly, and we enjoyed a little bit more time together doing a few activities and having popsicles outside in the playground gazeebo! The students signed each other's UMS t-shirts and wore them the last day (since field day was rained out and we didn't get to wear them then). Please be careful washing those the first time as the ink might run! Have a wonderful, safe, happy summer everyone!

Fun Activities
Today we did a few fun things in first grade as we start to wrap up the school year. We celebrated summer birthdays, recognizing the 5 students in our class who have their birthdays when we aren't in school, and we had a special library class where the Burnham Librarians (our town library) came in to tell the kids all about this year's summer programs at the library. The third exciting thing we did for the day was to plant potatoes for the food shelf! The Colchester Food Shelf is located in the old fire house right next to our school and all first graders got to go plant potatoes in the field behind the food shelf this morning. In the fall, when these students are in second grade, they will go back and harvest the potatoes that have grown to donate to the food shelf! It is really great to have the food shelf next door so that the students can continue learning how to be community helpers!

Chick Quadrammas
This week we made our final project to wrap up our chick life cycle unit. We made quadrammas (4 part di-rammas) to show the life cycle of a chick. Students used model magic and a few other materials to make a hen, eggs in a nest, an egg hatching, and a chick so that when the quadramma is spun around it follows the life cycle! Here are some photos of the kids working on them.

Chick Celebration
This afternoon we wrapped up our week with the chicks by having a celebration! Family members came to class and the kids showed off the different work they had done throughout the unit and we took the chicks out for some photo ops with the kids. The chicks are now headed off to a farm! Here are photos from the week and today's celebration.
