Our class has been spending time each day this week learning about voting and will continue to do so through election day on Tuesday. We are not discussing the actual presidential candidates but are focusing on other aspects of voting.
Earlier in the fall we learned about communities and community helpers and the kids are all familiar with what it means to contribute to their community and how different people contribute. This week we switched our our words "community" and "considerate" for the word "citizen" on our board at the front of the room (so far all of our vocabulary words have started with "c," though not on purpose!). We are continuing our activity where add a tally to the sentence strip with the word every time someone uses it in a sentence or hears it used/read. We have been discussing what it means to be a good citizen and how citizens contribute to their community. We also also discussed what a president is and why citizens vote for a president (or vote on other things).
We have been/will be doing some voting in our classroom and Mrs. Levi made us a fancy voting booth! Today we read the Mo Willems book Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and students voted on whether or not he should be allowed to drive the bus. We will do some more voting next week and continue reading about voting. There are many great kids books about voting such as Grace for President and Duck for President that we will read in class and you might like to check out with your child as well. Below you can see some photos of our duck presidents (to go along with the book), our voting about the pigeon driving the bus, our voting booth, and our "good citizen!" Stay tuned for more first grade election news next week.
