Solids and Liquids

First graders studied solids and liquids over the past month. We learned that solids keep their own shape but liquids don't have a shape/take on the shape of a container. We also learned about the properties of solids (ie rigid, flexible, rough, smooth, dull, shiny) and liquids (bubbly, viscous, transparent, transluscent) and came up with examples of each.

This past week we did a few fun experiments such as having a liquids race to find out which liquid would move fastest and furthest (using water color paint, tempera paint, and glue), making oobleck (corn starch and water with a little green food coloring to make it look like the oobleck in the book Bartholomew and the Oobleck, and making ice cream on Friday (using an ice cream making ball that has ice and rock salt in one compartment and cream, sugar, and vanilla in the other). Here are photos of some of the things we did!

Writers' Share

On Friday morning we wrapped up our unit on narrative writing with a writers' share! Students met with a buddy from Ms. Ransom's class next door and shared an edited final draft of their favorite narrative piece from the fall! We will be on to a new genre of writing after the Thanksgiving break.
