During the month of December we will be doing a few fun projects to learn about some of the major holidays that happen this month! First graders study mapping as a social studies unit during December and January then, in the spring, we do a social studies unit called Places in our World where we focus a lot on our neighbor Mexico. Learning about December holidays gives us a fun way to tie in to the current unit on mapping and preview our future unit on Mexico by learn about the Mexican December Holiday of Las Posadas.
Today is the first full day of Hanukkah so we read some books about the holiday and made hand print menorahs. We will learn to play the game dreidel on another day. Next week we will learn a lot about the Mexican Holiday of Las Posadas which starts on December 16. Later we will touch on Christmas and Kwanzaa. If there are any other December holidays celebrated by your family please let me know and we will talk about those as well!
