Flynn Trip

Tuesday, first grade classes at UMS attended a play at the Flynn Theater in Burlington! The trip was rescheduled from our original date in January where we had planned to see the play Dream Carver, which connected to our spring unit studying Mexico (that showing was cancelled when the Flynn had a power failure). Our trip was rescheduled for yesterday and we saw a play called, At Nightfall, which was a play performed through music and dance, without dialogue, and was set in a magical forest at night time. It was a different type of play than we are used to attending and was a neat experience! Thank you to our parent chaperones for coming along and helping to make the trip a success! Below are a few photos of us waiting for the show to start.

Another great coding game!

I wanted to let everyone know about an other great coding resource I have been introduced to. It is a website, not an app (so great for home computers or any mobile device with Internet), called learn.code.org. The website is a tutorial in computer science for kids in grades K-8 and has some really great videos explaining computer science as well as great coding games including an Angry Birds programming game! If you want to play the games without signing up just go to the site and scroll down to where it says "stages." Stage 2: The Maze is the set of Angry Birds programming puzzles, which should be simple for the kids in our class to figure out because they are similar to some of the coding apps we have tried. There are anumber of different games to try out and it looks like there is a way to earn prizes for task completion if you decide to sign up on the site (though you don't have to sign up to use the games). This looks like a really great resource for learning to program! Check it out!

Weather

Our class just finished a science unit about weather. We learned so much, including the what makes the weather (wind, moisture, air pressure, and temperature), the way the water cycle works (your child should be able to tell you the parts of the water cycle), the four main types of clouds (cumulus, cirrus, stratus, and nimbus), big science vocabulary words such as precipitation, condensation, evaporation, and much more! The kids will be bringing their lapbooks (manila folders full of all of their work from the unit) home tomorrow. Below is a padlet we made today highlighting some of the great things learned during the unit!

A Unique Experience for One of Our Classmates!

On Tuesday (the last day of winter vacation), our classmate Torren and some other students at our school had the chance to play hockey on the Boston Bruins' ice rink at the TD Garden in Boston with their local youth hockey team! Their exciting experience was featured on our local news last night so I thought that I would share the link to the news clip!

4 Winds

Today our class had two parent volunteers come in to teach a 4 Winds science and nature lesson! We learned about snags (rotting trees that are still standing) and rotting logs. We learned about how they are both important homes for many different types of creatures and had a chance to explore different rotting logs and what is inside them! Here are some photos from our exploration.
