Kidblog and Seesaw
Families, please be on the lookout for two important emails I just sent inviting you to your child's online Seesaw journal and their Kidblog. If you did not get the emails please let me know and I will resend them (and check that I have your preferred email address in my contact list).
Inauguration Day
Today we talked about the presidential inauguration and read a Scholastic News article (which is coming home today) about the White House and the job of the president! We did a mini-unit on voting and the role of the president in November and followed up on it today on inauguration day.
Four Winds
Our class participated in the 4 Winds nature science program today. We learned about conifers and pine cones! Thanks to Gardner's mom for teaching us!

School Wide Meeting -- updated video
We had a school-wide meeting this afternoon. Some students from our class and Ms. Ransom's class shared some of our learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ms. Ransom and I started by saying that we have been learning about narrative nonfiction and will soon start learning about biographies (as part of narrative nonfiction). Biographies answer the questions who, what, when, where, why, and how about a famous person. Each of the six students who shared answered one of these questions about Martin Luther King, Jr. and shared something they would do to make the world a better place.

Old Shoes for Art
This is a message from our art teacher, Ms. Vella, looking for any old, unwanted shoes for an art project!
I'm looking to collect a lot of unwanted shoes for an art project with students. If you have any old shoes lying around that you (or family members) never wear, please consider donating them to the art room! I will take pairs, single shoes, adult shoes. kids shoes, whatever. Any size and type. The more variety the better. Just send them in to school and your teacher will send them down to the art room!

DARE
During the month of January our class is participating in DARE. Our new education officer from the Colchester Police Department, officer Mellen, is teaching us about personal safety on Wednesday mornings. In first grade DARE lessons focus on things like how to get help in an emergency (knowing your phone number and address, how to call and talk to 911), following rules/laws and posted signs/traffic signals, being a helpful bystander, and using labels to only eat/drink food items and avoid opening chemicals or medications.
